Key Takeaways

  • High Earnings: Uber Eats offers more orders and more earnings

  • Less Competitive: Deliveroo offers a less competitive market

  • Better for Inner-City: Both Uber Eats and Deliveroo are great for inner-city deliveries with bikes and scooters.

Uber Eats and Deliveroo Key Differences

Depending on which delivery app you choose to work for, factors such as onboarding process, support, order volume, and pay should be considered before making your first step. While Deliveroo may be a great delivery app similar to Uber Eats, there are a few things to note before you apply for them.

Gig AppOnboardingSupportOrder VolumeFlexibilityPay
Uber EatsEasy (same day set up)AutomatedHigh DemandNo Scheduling$15-$25 per hour
DeliverooHard (with waitlist and legal steps)More personalSlow off-peakShift Selection$12-$20 per hour

While I personally have worked for Uber Eats, I have many friends from the UK who have claimed delivering with Deliveroo is great as an extra side gig, but to replace their other gig apps (like Uber Eats)? Not so fast.

Uber Eats (Pros and Cons)

Pros
Cons
Flexible scheduling
Saturated with high competition
High earnings
Peak can be a hit or miss
Consistent bonuses
Your location plays a large role in earnings
Consistent work

During peak hours, I would say Uber Eats is worth it. However, if you consider your location, competition, and means of transportation, you could struggle with Uber Eats.

When delivering with a car, you always have to consider the gas you pay to get from A to B just to deliver the food to your client. At the end of a long 8 hour day, you might be looking at a daily spend of $80 or more on gas (unless you find ways to get gas for free).

An 8 hour day, in a general city lets say Miami, you can earn around on average $200 a day. Thats if you have a good day as well. So realistically speaking if you spend $80 a day on gas, and you earn $150-$200 a day, your overall earnings are more like $70-$120 a day.

While Uber Eats is extremely flexible, you may find that making a real profit will only be done if you work around 8 hours or so.

Deliveroo (Pros and Cons)

Pros
Cons
Flexible and well structured
Long onboarding with strict process
Higher per-order earnings
very few orders off peak
Easy-to-use app
inconsistent bonuses and incentives
More transparency on accepting orders
Only limited to the UK

While Deliveroo has higher pay-per order, you may find yourself sitting for long hours waiting for a delivery during off peak hours. Holiday though are insane, and you can expect to hit pretty easy bank using Deliveroo.

If you have a good bike (or e-bike), I would highly suggest using Deliveroo as a second option to Uber Eats. Deliveroo surprisingly pays much less than Uber Eats due to its demand. Because of this, less money means less gas money. But if you have a non-gas vehicle or way of transport, you can earn $100+ fast

The app is rather easy to use, with fully transparent order expectations. However, you may find yourself struggling with the inconcistent bonuses and incentives. My friends would argue sometimes there would be harldy any bonuses, and when there are, its always at an inconvenient time (could be situational).

As Uber Eats does offer great pay during peak, you can maybe try to avoid competition by accepting orders depending on where they are available first.

Final Verdict: Uber Eats or Deliveroo?

In my honest opinion, I would still choose Uber Eats as my primary way to earn money delivering food. If I have a bike or not, I still earn a decent living. Its also perfect for when need to earn money as a student and to pay off your roommate.

Deliveroo, however, is definitely unique as its strictly available in the UK. If I had a designated delivery app that is only available to residents near me, then I would definitely give it a try. While it may pay less, you face a little less competition (and less weirdos in the middle of nowhere to deliver too).

Overall, as a secondary app, I would choose Deliveroo, however for my primary app to use as my main side hustle, Uber Eats does the job.
