You can earn money by charging electric scooters. So long as you have a vehicle and a smartphone, you can become a “juicer”, but there are quite a few steps to follow.

How do you become an electric scooter charger

To start making money charging electric scooters, you’ll need to follow these steps:

  1. 1

You need to create an LLC (Limited Liability Company) to charge electric scooters, as you will not be an employee but rather a partner. There are companies which do this for you (ZenBusiness, LegalZoom, IncFile), or you can do it yourself:

    • 2

Choose a name for your LLC.

    • 3

      Appoint a registered agent.

    • 4

Obtain an EIN (Employer Identification Number) from the IRS.

    • 5

Register for state and local taxes.

    • 6

      Open a business bank account.

    • 7

      Set up liability insurance.

  2. 8

Once you have an LLC, apply to become a partner with a scooter company, here are some of the biggest scooter providers:

You can normally expect a response within a matter of days or weeks, which will confirm that you have been accepted as a partner.

  2. 2

You will receive individual instructions from the company you sign up with about the next steps, but each of them have a separate app for scooter chargers you will need to download, like Lime’s ‘Supply’ app:

Use this app to find uncharged scooters, collect and charge the scooters, and return them to dropoff points.

What are the requirements to become a scooter charger?

Thankfully, there are very few requirements to become a scooter charger:

  • Be at least 18

  • Own or lease a vehicle

  • Hold a valid driver's license

  • Have a smartphone for navigating the app

Note that not every city requires chargers, and so even if you meet these requirements and follow the instructions above, you may have to apply to various scooter companies.

How much money can you make charging scooters?

You will be looking at an average of $171 per day, based on charging 60 scooters a day, although this figure can vary drastically and will depend on your region.

CategoryDetailsCost/Revenue
RevenueCharging 60 scooters per day at $4 each (average of $3-$5 range)$240/day
Electricity Costs*60 scooters x $0.15 per charge$9/day
Vehicle Costs**Lease, insurance, and fuel for a small truck$60/day
Total ExpensesElectricity + Vehicle Costs$69/day
Net EarningsRevenue - Total Expenses$171/day

*The average scooter has a battery capacity of 20 Ah at 48V, and so if we assume we are being charged the US average price for electricity, $0.16 per kWh, and we account for a slight inefficiency in charging, then we get to a rough estimate of about 15 cents per charge.

**This estimate is based on a long-term leasing contract, and average US gas prices.
