Monopoly Go is a legit, official mobile Monopoly game, available on Apple and Android. It’s a free to play game by Scopely, creators of other titles like Stumble Guys and Marvel Strike Force. The game is incredibly popular, and is the fastest game ever to gross $5 billion, which it achieved in just two years.
You can play the game for free, but you will also be encouraged to spend money in-game on extra dice, in-game currency, and other upgrades. It’s far from essential, though, so don’t get sucked in too deeply.
Is Monopoly Go a Good Game?
I’ve honestly had a good time with Monopoly Go. It’s one of those mobile games with a strong focus on getting numbers to go up, but I enjoy the way this one is dressed up. There are plenty of ways within the game to earn extra dice and other rewards, the aesthetics are whimsical and easy on the eyes, and there are even frequent crossover events, from Star Wars to Marvel.
You can use multiple methods to upgrade your boards and unlock new in-game items, including stealing from rival players, collecting stickers, and using classic Monopoly stalwarts like the Community Chest.
It’s worth mentioning that Monopoly Go is almost nothing like standard Monopoly. You won’t be playing like you do at Christmas time, starting beef with your family over that unfair trade that gave grandma Mayfair. Rather, you’re trundling around the board earning money from properties, and spending that money on upgrading landmarks on the board. Once all landmarks are upgraded, you’ll unlock a new board with a new theme, and so on.
Overall, I enjoy Monopoly Go for what it is - a nice time sink that provides satisfying progress daily, and I’ve never spent a penny on it.
