Dota 2 drops items through several in-game triggers. Drops are not awarded if you've been placed in low priority queue or left a match early, so maintaining a clean conduct record keeps you eligible.
The main drop sources are:

- Crownfall Events: Playing as different heroes earns tokens toward event rewards.
- Candy Shop: Part of Crownfall events, the Candy Shop lets you open candy bags for item rewards.
For items beyond standard matchmaking drops, earning rewards through Freecash lets you convert gaming activity into cash you can put toward Dota 2 items directly.

Dota 2 runs giveaways through official channels and community streamers on a fairly regular basis. Entry requirements are typically low, making them worth tracking even for casual community participants.
The two best places to monitor for giveaways are the Dota 2 official Instagram and the Dota 2 Twitch channel. Both surface official announcements and streamer-run promotional events with item prizes.
Seasonal updates also bring free items. The Frostivus 2023 update distributed free stickers, emoticons, loading screens, and a ward skin as a final reward, with no purchase required.
