If you’re trying to look as slick as possible in League of Legends, you’ll need to start collecting skins. However, it can be tricky to get around the requirement to pay real-life money for them. Thankfully, the game does offer multiple methods you can utilize to ensure free-to-play players aren’t left in the dust, as well as some little loopholes you can take advantage of for free LoL skins.

Hextech Crafting - Skin of Your Choice (Kind Of)

The Hextech chest system changed in early 2025, but was quickly reinstated to an extent due to fan backlash. Here’s how it works now:

These chests replace the seasonal free skin and the mystery Epic or lower skin

Hextech Keys, earned through Honor rewards, random loot, and event missions, can open the chest

Each chest has a 50% chance to contain a Skin Shard. This is a temporary fragment of an unowned skin

You can now craft the skin in a few different ways

So it isn’t a completely free skin you can pick from, but you can get your next permanent favourite skin for free by crafting and upgrading.

Complete the Free Battle Pass Track - Skin Shards and Orbs

This is a classic - complete the free track of League of Legends’ Battle Pass and you’ll earn plenty of rewards to keep you going. These include:

All you have to do is activate the current season pass, complete in-game missions, and rank up. Remember to aim for those Hextech chest reward milestones!

Daily and Login Rewards - Skin Shards, Essence, Icons, and more

By logging in to LoL every day, you’ll get a consistent stream of rewards which can be used towards getting free skins.

It’s super easy - all you have to do is play the game and the goods will be automatically added to your account. It’s a slow process, but worth doing if you’re maximizing your freebies anyway.

Honor Rewards - Exclusive Skins

Reaching Honor Level 5 across a season will give you an exclusive Honor skin for that Act. Pretty sweet!

Make sure you’re completing your Honor missions, maintaining good in-game conduct, and you’ll get the Honor skin along with your two Hextech chests.

Free Skin Giveaways from Riot - Rarity Varies

You’ll have to keep an eye on Riot’s official channels for this one, as it only happens occasionally. 

Follow their X, Instagram, and Reddit accounts to ensure you don’t miss it—they can come in the form of codes, events, or other kinds of promotions.

Earn Money Online with Freecash - All Rarities

If you want those precious paid skins but don’t want to break the bank, Freecash has the answer. You can earn money online or from home, and spend it on League of Legends cosmetics without it even needing to pass through your bank account!

Rerolling Skin Shards - Random Skin

As touched on in the Hextech Crafting section, you can take 3 skin shards and reroll them into a random permanent skin without spending any Essence.

Of course, this is a bit of a risky one, as you might be stuck with some absolute rubbish, but it’s got some pretty good highroll potential. You might get that skin you’ve been craving, or even fall in love with one you hadn’t thought of!

Just head to your loot inventory, grab 3 shards, and click “Reroll”.

Disenchanting Shards for Orange Essence - Selected Skin

If you aren’t a fan of randomness, you can disenchant your shards into Orange Essence. This’ll take a lot longer, but disenchanting allows you to permanently upgrade shards of your choice, rather than having to rely on randomness.

Complete Ranked Seasons - Exclusive Skin

You’ll earn the exclusive skin of the current season by winning 15 ranked games and reaching Honor rank 2 or better.

Basically, play ranked a decent amount and you should qualify for this freebie at the end of the Act.

Clash Rewards - Orbs and Capsules

By participating in Clash Tournaments, you can earn orbs and capsules, which drop loot that can include skin shards and emotes.

These shards, as always, can be used to create random skins or upgrade skins of your choice.
