Gems are the premium currency in Rise of Kingdoms. You can get about 2000 for $10, and you can use them to do everything in the game, from levelling up your VIP to buying cosmetic items.
There are ways to get Gems for free in-game, and ways to get discounts when buying them. But the fastest way to get Gems without spending a dime involves completing paid tasks online in exchange for Google Play or Apple gift cards, then using those funds to buy Gems. I use this method to get Gems, and I can normally get at least a thousand in an hour.
The fastest way to get free Gems in Rise of Kingdoms
I want to start with my own approach to earning Gems, which is very fast. I use Freecash to earn gift cars, by completing simple online tasks, then I use those funds to buy Gems.
Freecash is free to join, allows you to earn money on your phone, and pays out as soon as you earn $5, which can be done in less than an hour.
They have a wide-range of tasks, including surveys and product testing, but I suggest you look for paid gaming offers, which are the easiest to complete without getting bored.
Just this last weekend, I made $15 in Monopoly Go in an afternoon and was able to buy 3000 Gems for Rise of Kingdoms!
In-game methods to earn Gems
Defeat Barbarians
Barbarians are neutral units dotted all over the world, they won't attack you but if you attack them (and you're successful) you can earn Gems. You will not get a lot of Gems with this method, however.
For every Barbarian you kill, you get four items. One of those items is guaranteed to be one of the following:

Arrow of Resistance

10 Gems

Obsolete Starlight Sculpture

Ordinary Starlight Sculpture
So per Barbarian, you have a 25% chance to earn 10 Gems. Which means each Barbarian provides 2.5 Gems on average.
Complete Daily Objectives
You get three Daily Objectives a day in Rise of Kingdoms, and for each Objective you complete, you earn a varying amount of 'Activity Points'. On a typical day, there are about 10 Activity Points to be earned.
Once you have saved up 100 Activity Points, after at least 10 days, you can redeem these Points to open a Chest, which contains 100 Gems. So, with Daily Objectives, you can earn about 10 Gems a day.
Collect Gems from around the map
You can find Gem nodes on the Rise of Kingdoms map, but there are no fixed locations or tricks you can use to maximize how many you find. Here are a few simple tips for collecting Gems:

Hop from node to node rather than waiting in one spot, and spread your armies out to cover more ground efficiently.

Use strong gathering commanders like Matilda and Constance, along with good gathering gear, to increase gem yields. Always run gathering buffs, max your gathering tech.

Farm during off-peak hours when competition is lower.
You cannot rely on this method for your entire Gem supply, but occasionally you will get lucky and find a good haul.
Participate in events that offer Gem rewards
Many events are focused on encouraging you to spend Gems, and this is usually a good idea (you get the best prices during events). However, we also get regular events where you can earn Gems.
How to earn Gems changes every event, so I cannot provide specific advice, but I can generally recommend you always at least read the notification when a new event begins.
Buy Gems from a third-party seller
If you want to make the absolute most Gems as quickly as possible, you could withdraw your Freecash money to PayPal or bank transfer, and then buy your gems from a third-party seller. This is how you can effectively get a year-round 20% discount.
To find a trusted seller, I recommend searching for Rise of Kingdoms Gems, then checking out each website you find on Trustpilot before making any purchases.
Avoid 'Gem-generators'
And a final tip for you, ignore all links to 'Gem-generators'. You can ignore any kind of generator you ever see for free anything. These do not work, they just want you on the site to bombard you with ads (or worse).
