Key Takeaways

  • You can take advantage of free trials for both Audible and Amazon Music.

  • After using both trials, use Freecash to fund an Audible subscription.

  • Consider the free library of audiobooks provided at LibriVox.

I've been using Audible for years, as they have a massive library and great exclusive content. But, as many of you probably already know, this is not a cheap service.

Audible Plus is $15/month, and for that price you only get one credit, which can be used to buy a single audiobook. But there are ways to avoid paying the full price for a few months, and even a free alternative worth considering.

Use the Audible Plus free trial

The first (and most obvious) way to get free audiobooks is by signing up to the 1-month trial of Audible Plus. This is a no-strings attached trial, though you will need to provide payment details.

For that first month, you will be given an Audible credit, which will allow you to add exactly one audiobook to your library for free, permanently.

They sometimes offer a 3-month trial for $1, which I highly recommend. You won't find a better price for three audiobooks.

Use the Amazon Music Ultimate free trial

Amazon Music Ultimate, the most expensive version of Amazon's music service, also includes access to an audiobook from Audible each month. You should therefore separately subscribe to this free trial after doing the Audible Plus trial.

And the best part? Amazon Music Ultimate's free trial currently lasts for three months:

However, there is one noticeable downside. Even if you can get Amazon Music Ultimate for free, you do not get to keep the audiobooks, like you can when you use an Audible credit, you instead 'borrow' the titles for a month.

Use Freecash to fund an Audible Plus subscription

Once you have used both free trials, the easiest way to continue getting audiobooks is by using Freecash to fund an Audible Plus subscription. With this platform, you can get a monthly audiobook without spending your own money.

Freecash is a platform that will pay you to complete simple tasks online, like testing new games as a player tester or responding to surveys. And getting started is easy:

  1. 1 Log into Freecash with Google or Facebook, or create an account.
  2. 2 Choose tasks that interest you, and complete them from your phone.
  3. 3 Withdraw your funds via bank transfer or PayPal.

And in just one afternoon you would easily have made enough to fund an Audible Plus subscription.

Exchange audiobooks on Audible for credits

You will not be able to do this repeatedly, but it should work at least once for every account. Once you have listened to an audiobook, return it and buy another audiobook:

  1. 1 Go to Audible and sign in.
  2. 2 Select your name in the top-right corner (where it says "Hi [your name]").
  3. 3 From the dropdown menu, select Account Details
  4. 4 Select Purchase History from the sidebar on the left.
  5. 5 From the list of purchased books, press the Return button beside the book you want to exchange.
  6. 6 You will need to provide a reason for the return.
  7. 7 Confirm the return and the book should be instantly refunded in exchange for a credit.

If you have listened to a book once already and are happy to exchange it for another, this can be a great option. It should work at least once or twice for everyone, but not indefinitely.

Consider free alternatives to Audible like LibriVox

There is a free alternative to Audible called LibriVox, where users can upload their own book readings. They have about 20,000 audiobooks on there, and getting access to one you like as simple as visiting the website and pressing download.

Of course, as a free alternative to a paid service, you cannot expect the same quality or quantity, and the site's UI feels dated. But the volunteers are passionate about their voice-over work, and especially if you want to listen to the classics, LibriVox should have a decent audiobook for you to enjoy.
